Is your website pleasant on a smartphone? 5 checks

Is your website really pleasant on a smartphone? The most reliable way is to test it yourself on a real phone, with five simple checks: readability, buttons, forms, speed and the full journey through to getting in touch.

For most small businesses, shopkeepers and independent professionals, more than half of visits come from a phone. Yet many websites are approved on a large computer screen and never looked at anywhere else. The result: a visitor in a hurry, standing in the street or on public transport, leaves within seconds.

Why does mobile change everything?

On a phone the screen is small, a finger is less precise than a mouse and the connection is sometimes slow. A site that "displays" is not necessarily a site that "works". Google also relies on the mobile version of pages to assess a site, so a poor smartphone experience can weigh on your visibility too.

A common example: a tradesperson receives most quote requests by phone. If the number cannot be tapped, or the "Contact" button is hidden in a confusing menu, every visit is a missed opportunity.

What are the five checks to run on your phone?

What about speed on mobile?

Test with Wi-Fi switched off, on 4G. If the first page takes more than three or four seconds to become usable, some visitors will leave. The usual causes are oversized images, too many fonts and unnecessary plugins. The topic is covered in detail in our article on website speed.

How can you test without being a technician?

Take a recent phone and, if possible, an older one: the difference in smoothness is often revealing. Then follow a real customer's journey: arrive from Google, understand what you offer, find your opening hours or prices, then get in touch. Time it, and note every moment you hesitate. Also ask a friend or relative who does not know your business to do the same journey in silence: their hesitations are worth more than any expert opinion.

To go further, Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool gives a mobile score and a list of points to fix, and Search Console reports the mobile usability problems it detects on your site.

Do you need a new site if mobile is poor?

Not always. If the structure is sound, a few adjustments are often enough: sizes, spacing, images, buttons. However, an old site built for a computer screen may call for a redesign. Our custom website design service is mobile first, meaning phone screens are designed first and then adapted to larger formats.

Where to start?

Take ten minutes today: open your site on your phone, apply the five checks above and note the three most annoying issues. Fix first those that affect getting in touch. If the result worries you, read about our working method or contact us: we can look at your site with you and tell you, with no obligation, what is worth fixing.
